Metso HP Bronze Thrust Bearing: Eccentric Axial Support

The Bronze Thrust Bearing Plate is the lower axial load-bearing interface for the Eccentric Assembly in Metso HP Series cone crushers (HP300, HP400, HP500).
Installed on the Main Frame, this precision-machined bronze ring supports the rotating weight of the eccentric assembly and the countershaft gear reaction forces.
Unlike generic crusher spares, our thrust bearings are manufactured from High-Lead Tin Bronze to withstand the high sliding velocities and thermal loads characteristic of modern high-speed hydraulic crushers.

For mining maintenance planners sourcing from crusher part suppliers, the flatness and metallurgy of this component are critical.
A worn or warped thrust bearing will cause the eccentric to tilt, destroying the gear backlash setting and leading to catastrophic pinion failure.
Our components are surface-ground to a flatness tolerance of < 0.02mm to ensure stable gear mesh.

Core Engineering Advantages

  • High-Speed Lubricity: Manufactured from UNS C93700 (SAE 64) High-Lead Bronze. The 10-20% Lead content creates a self-lubricating film that prevents the steel Upper Thrust Bearing from welding to the bronze Lower Thrust Bearing during start-up (boundary lubrication phase).
  • Debris Embeddability: The leaded bronze matrix is soft enough to allow microscopic oil contaminants (silica/metal fines) to embed into the surface. This sacrificial action prevents the debris from scoring the harder mating steel plate.
  • Geometric Stability: Centrifugally cast and stress-relieved to prevent warping. Maintaining a perfectly flat thrust surface is essential for keeping the bevel gear and pinion in alignment under load.

Performance & Wear Analysis

Using premium leaded bronze thrust bearings prevents “Eccentric Tilt”:

  • Gear Protection: As the thrust bearing wears, the eccentric drops. This tightens the gear backlash. Our wear-resistant alloy maintains the vertical height longer, keeping the gears in the “sweet spot” for 12,000+ hours.
  • Heat Dissipation: The high thermal conductivity of C93700 bronze helps draw heat away from the friction interface, preventing oil oxidation (varnish) that leads to bearing failure.

Field Diagnosis: When to Replace?

The Thrust Bearing is a “fuse” for the gear train. Inspect during liner changes:

  • Backlash Change: If your gear backlash has decreased significantly (tightened) since the last service, the thrust bearing has thinned out. Measure the thickness immediately.
  • “Smearing” or Melting: If the bronze surface looks smeared or like melted wax, the oil supply failed or the crusher was overloaded. Replace both the bronze and steel plates.
  • Wedge Wear: If the bearing is worn thinner on one side than the other, the main frame seat is warped, or the countershaft box alignment is incorrect.

Expert Engineer’s Note: Shimming & End Play

Critical Maintenance Advice: When replacing the Bronze Thrust Bearing, you are altering the height of the eccentric assembly.
This directly affects the Bevel Gear Backlash and Root Clearance.
You must check the backlash after installation.
Often, you will need to add or remove Shim Gaskets under the Lower Thrust Bearing to restore the OEM backlash specification (typically 0.4mm – 0.6mm).
Failure to re-shim will result in stripped gear teeth within 24 hours of operation.
