Manufacturing ProcessForged or Rolled Ring + CNC Turning
Installation MethodWelded to Head Nut (Torch cut for removal)

The Torch Ring (often called the Burning Ring) is the unsung hero of the cone crusher chamber. As experienced crusher part suppliers, we know that while this part is small, it performs a critical role: protecting the expensive Head Nut (Locking Nut) from being eroded by the flow of crushed rock.

Core Advantages: Designed for Maintenance

Unlike other Wear parts that require extreme hardness, the Torch Ring requires a specific metallurgical balance to ensure easy maintenance:

  • Weldability (ASTM A36): We manufacture our Torch Rings from high-quality low-carbon steel. This ensures that when you weld the ring to the Locking Nut during installation, the weld penetrates deeply and holds securely, preventing the ring from spinning loose during operation.
  • Torch-Cutting Efficiency: The name “Torch Ring” comes from the removal method. At the end of the liner’s life, the ring must be cut off with an oxy-acetylene torch. Our material composition prevents the “blowback” and hardening issues associated with alloy steels, allowing for a clean, fast cut that doesn’t damage the reusable Head Nut.
  • Precise Fit: The inner diameter is CNC machined to fit perfectly over the Locking Nut’s shoulder, acting as a shield against the abrasive “stone blizzard” inside the chamber.

Performance Comparison: Material Selection

Why do we use Mild Steel instead of Manganese for this specific part? See the comparison:

MaterialSuitability for Torch RingField Consequence
Mild Steel (Our Standard)ExcellentEasy to weld, fast to cut off. Protects the nut sacrificially.
Manganese SteelPoorHard to weld (cracks). Extremely difficult to torch cut (needs plasma), causing long downtime.
High ChromeDangerousBrittle. Will shatter under impact and cannot be welded.

Field Diagnosis: When to Check the Torch Ring?

The Torch Ring is a sacrificial part, but its failure can be costly. Monitor it closely:

  • Nut Exposure: If the Torch Ring wears away completely, the expensive Head Nut (Locking Nut) will be exposed to the rock flow. If the nut’s threads or hex shape are worn away, you may have to cut the entire nut off, costing thousands of dollars.
  • Weld Cracking: If the ring rattles or spins, the installation weld was poor or the material was incorrect. A loose ring offers no protection.
  • Premature Wear: If the ring wears out before the Mantle does, you may need a thicker / heavy-duty profile Torch Ring for your specific application.

Expert Tip: Installation Best Practices

Don’t skip the weld!
When installing a new Cone Crusher Liner (Mantle), the Torch Ring is placed on top of the tightened Head Nut.

Critical Step: You must weld the Torch Ring to the Nut (usually 3-4 tack welds or a continuous bead depending on the model).
Also, fill the gap between the Torch Ring and the Mantle with Silicone Sealant or a specific epoxy. This prevents fine dust from packing into the threads of the Head Nut, ensuring that when it’s time to change liners, the nut unscrews easily.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Why is it called a “Torch Ring”?
A1: Because the only way to remove it is to cut it with a cutting torch. It is welded in place to protect the nut, and at the end of its life, it is “torched” off to access the nut.

Q2: Can I reuse a Torch Ring?
A2: No. The Torch Ring is destroyed during the removal process (cutting). Even if it looks intact, it cannot be re-welded securely. Always order a new Torch Ring with every new Mantle.

Q3: Does this ring seal the oil?
A3: No. The Torch Ring is a mechanical shield at the top of the crushing head. The oil sealing is done by the “Seal Ring” or “Dust Collar” located at the bottom of the head. Do not confuse the two.yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
