Symons Cone Crusher Socket Liner: C93700 Bronze Replacement
The Socket Liner (also referred to as the Spherical Bearing or Socket Sealing Ring) is the primary load-bearing component in the Symons / Nordberg style cone crusher. Located in the main frame socket, it supports the entire weight of the Head assembly and the crushing force. It acts as a sliding bearing, allowing the head to nutate (wobble) on a film of oil.
We manufacture this critical bronze component using ASTM C93700 High-Leaded Tin Bronze via a Centrifugal Casting process. This method ensures a dense, inclusion-free structure capable of withstanding the immense compressive loads (up to 400 tons on a 7′ machine) without deformation or oil permeation.
Material Selection: Why C93700?
For Symons crushers, material choice is non-negotiable:
- Lead Content (10%): Provides “emergency lubrication.” If the oil pump fails or the film ruptures under shock load, the lead smears onto the steel head ball, preventing catastrophic galling (welding).
- Conformability: The alloy is hard enough to carry the load but soft enough to conform slightly to the head ball geometry, ensuring an even distribution of pressure.

Field Diagnosis: Inspection Guide
1. The “Step” Test
Run your hand across the liner surface. If you feel a distinct ridge or “step” at the limit of the head ball’s travel, the liner is worn out. This step will cut the oil film and ruin the head ball.
2. Contact Pattern
Upon removal, inspect the wear pattern. It should be uniform. If only one side is worn (biased wear), the Socket Sealing Ring springs may be weak, or the crusher is being fed off-center.
3. Oil Contamination
Bronze glitter in the oil filter is a sign of liner distress. Immediate inspection is required to save the Head Ball.
Installation Best Practices
[Expert Tip] Installation is critical for socket liner life.
1. Interference Fit: Most socket liners have a light interference fit. Use Dry Ice to shrink the liner before dropping it into the socket. Do not hammer it.
2. Blue Check: Apply Engineer’s Blue to the Head Ball and seat it on the new liner. Rotate 20 degrees. You must see >80% contact. If not, scrape the high spots until contact is uniform.
3. Bolt Torque: Torque the socket cap screws in a star pattern to the OEM spec. Loose screws will allow the liner to fret and spin.
