Sandvik CH660 Top Shell 442.9037-00 | EC Chamber | ASTM A148 Cast Steel
The Top Shell (Part No. 442.9037-00) is the upper structural backbone of the Sandvik CH660 (H6800) Cone Crusher. Weighing over 5 tons, this massive steel casting integrates the “Spider” arms and the outer housing into a single monoblock structure. This specific part number corresponds to the EC (Extra Coarse) configuration, featuring elevated spider arms to accommodate the largest possible feed size for secondary crushing applications.
Unlike consumable wear parts, the Top Shell is a permanent capital asset. We manufacture our Top Shells from high-purity ASTM A148 Grade 90-60 Cast Steel. Each unit undergoes a rigorous normalizing and tempering heat treatment process to relieve internal casting stresses, ensuring the frame does not crack under the millions of load cycles it will endure.
Structural Engineering: Why Material Integrity Matters
The Top Shell endures two primary forces:
- Vertical Tension: The crushing force tries to lift the Top Shell off the Bottom Shell. The flange bolts transfer this load. Our flanges are precision-machined to ensure 100% contact area, preventing bolt fatigue.
- Lateral Shear: The gyrating main shaft exerts side-load on the Spider Bushing. Our Top Shells feature a reinforced central hub to resist ovalization of the spider bushing bore.
Performance Comparison: Premium Casting vs. Standard
In structural crusher spares, the difference lies in the casting defects you can’t see.
| Feature | Standard Aftermarket | Our Premium Top Shell | Customer Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defect Standard | ASTM Level 4-5 | ASTM Level 2-3 | Less risk of catastrophic cracking |
| Machining | Manual Drilling | CNC Boring Center | Perfect alignment of Spider Bushing |
| Arm Protection | None | Integrated Liner Bosses | Ready for Arm Liner installation |

When to Replace the Top Shell?
While designed for 20+ years of life, certain failures necessitate replacement:
- Spider Bushing Bore Ovality: If the central bore housing the Spider Bushing becomes worn or oval (>0.15mm), the main shaft will tilt. This destroys the eccentric bushing below. If line-boring is no longer possible, the Top Shell must be replaced.
- Flange Erosion: If the crusher has been operated with loose main frame bolts, the mating flange surfaces may be fretted or “washed out.” A non-flat flange will snap bolts repeatedly.
- Arm Cracks: Use Dye Penetrant (DPI) to check the roots of the Spider Arms annually. If cracks extend into the structural body, welding is often a temporary fix. Replacement is safer.
Quality Assurance Protocol
We treat every Top Shell as a safety-critical component.
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT): 100% volumetric scan of the spider arms and flange transition zones.
- Magnetic Particle (MT): Surface inspection of all machined areas.
- Dimensional Report: CMM verification of the bolt circle and spider bore concentricity.
