Sandvik CH660 Mantle Replacement: 442.9314-01

The Mantle (Part No. 442.9314-01 or 442.8816-02 depending on cavity) is the moving wear component at the heart of the Sandvik CH660 cone crusher. Mounted on the cone head, it gyrates to crush material against the stationary bowl liner. This component must endure not only abrasive wear but also extreme compressive and shear forces. Standard manganese steel often deforms under these loads, leading to difficult removal. Our replacement mantles are engineered using Mn18Cr2 High Manganese Steel, specifically heat-treated to balance ductility with surface hardness.

As a specialized crusher part supplier, we utilize Lost Foam Casting technology. This ensures that the internal conical surface (which mates with the Cone Head) is dimensionally perfect. A poor fit here causes the mantle to loosen during operation, damaging the head nut and torch ring.

Metallurgy: Why Mn18Cr2?

For the CH660 application, we modify the standard ASTM A128 specification:

  • Plastic Deformation Control: Standard Mn13 steel tends to “grow” or stretch excessively under load, making it impossible to remove the mantle nut. Our Mn18Cr2 alloy has a higher yield strength, minimizing this plastic flow while maintaining toughness.
  • Work Hardening: Delivered at ~220 HBW, the surface rapidly hardens to 500+ HBW upon impact with rock. This creates a wear-resistant shield while the core remains shock-absorbent.

Field Diagnosis: When to Change Your Mantle

Optimizing wear life requires vigilance. Look for these signs:

1. The “Washed Out” Bottom
Inspect the lower 20% of the mantle. If it is worn razor-thin or has “washed out” (concave wear profile), the support for the crushing force is gone. This transfers stress to the Cone Head, risking catastrophic fatigue failure of the head itself.

2. Mantle Spinning
If you see the mantle rotating relative to the head nut (witness marks on the nut), the backing compound has failed or the fit was poor. Stop immediately. A spinning mantle will shear the locking keys and fuse the nut to the shaft.

3. Throughput Balance
If the mantle wear is uneven (oval shape), check your feed. Off-center feeding reduces liner life by 50% and damages the main shaft bushing.

Installation Best Practices

  1. Backing Compound: Essential for CH660 mantles. Ensure the void between the mantle and head is 100% filled with high-impact epoxy. This acts as a damper.
  2. Head Nut Torque: While the mantle is self-tightening during operation, proper initial torque (approx. 4,500 Nm) is crucial to seat the liner and prevent initial movement.
  3. Burn Ring Check: Always replace the Burn Ring (Torch Ring) when changing the mantle. A worn ring exposes the expensive locking nut to wear.

[Expert Tip] Always verify the part number against your crushing chamber profile (e.g., EC, C, M, F). Installing an ‘Extra Coarse’ mantle in a ‘Fine’ chamber application will result in poor nip angle, rock ejection, and drastically reduced throughput.
